what is no-GI?
Gi means Kimono, which is the uniform you wear traditionally in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Therefore, No-Gi is without the uniform, referring to wearing shorts and rash guard. With, No-Gi, you are not allowed to grab the clothing. It’s a lot of fun as it’s a lot faster and more explosive than in the Gi. Even though the techniques are a lot narrower, it makes up for it with prevalent wrestling and leg submission skills.
There might be less options but, the advantage is there is less friction. This makes it more slippery, meaning it’s easier to escape pins and submissions than it is with Gi. This helps challenge you physically as you will have to rely more on speed, cardio, and strength. This in turn gives the No-Gi more excitement and even brings skill levels closer together.
our philosophy on no-gi
We believe a complete BJJ player should train in both and as they really do complement each other. The Gi improves defense and No-Gi makes offense tighter. We prefer beginners to train in the Gi to build a strong base on the fundamentals. It slows everything down for novices which gives them time to think and adds a better understanding of the importance of strategy. Most importantly, because the Gi offers more control because of friction for beginners sparring/rolling other new White Belts makes acute injuries become less of a risk.
In short, we love all forms of Jiu-Jitsu and we don’t see an advantage in limiting yourself to just one form. Unless you’re a high level athlete competing professionally in grappling or mixed martial arts (which 99% of people are not) doing both you will have an abundance of training partners, class times, and coaches at your disposal. The best way to get good at Jiu-Jitsu is spending time on the mat, and the more training options you have, the more able you will be to train and train often.
Pros of No-GI
- Build stronger offensive skills- because the lack of friction and grips forces you to develop better body positioning skills
- Improved cardiovascular & conditioning – It’s more fast-paced
- More use of leg locks – depending on rule sets this can develop a new set of weapons
- Wrestling techniques – Its harder to pull guard so takedowns are mostly wrestling based
Pros of GI
- Builds defensive skills- You will need to use more technique to escape submissions and pins as there is less sweat
- Skills are more easily transferable to No-Gi
- Builds more upper body strength from non-stop grabbing and pulling of fabric
- Develop better problem solving & strategy – Because of friction, it is a slower pace, making the game more methodical which forces a more technical approach.
